they would either run out of business rather vigorous or start employing individuals to vandalise the installations,perhaps or more potential the electricity companies would have to diversify into solar panel sale, installation, maintenance and cleaning maybe (we don't need the bird crap on the panel degrading the peak activities do we..)
They are working on it right now, making sure it never happen by discrediting global warm as a myth. As the last resort they can other sell us dirt cheap electricity for a while until solar panel manufacturer go bust.
Charge you more for the gas and electricity you will use when the sun is not shining so that they carry on their required ROI.

THAT'S WHAT THEY WOULD DO:
- form the accountability, measuring, billing (+ or -) for everyone's production
- transport the electricity to cover local peak in emergency
- cover globally emergency peaks and production peak, for example by pumping into hydro-reservoirs uphill or producing by letting the water flow down
- assist those in their installations
- product forecasts
- provide energy contained by large quantity at lower prices for industrial customers (since you wouldn't want to pay twice the price for your coupé, or would you ?)
- invest in R&D
- pool investments within other much cheaper sources of renewables (the UK is going to build 8GW of tidal power... the equivalent of 6 modern nuclear power plants !)
make us reward for a license to have solar panel which would be costly so then they would formulate money from doing nothing similar to the television license family
go out of business. I guess nearby would still be businesses that would need the electric and gas companies. And solar panel work better in tropical and subtropical regions. I don't deduce someone living in North Dakota or Maine would benefit as much from solar panel (especially in winter) as someone living within Texas or Florida.
They would have to put prices up to keep going their profit levels despite the lower consumption. The bank reduced staffing levels by introducing change machines. Now they are doing their best to charge us for using the machines.
