The sun is too close and while it is a star, when we refer to stars, we refer to those that are farther away and appear approaching points of light surrounded by the sky.
There was another bright "star" contained by the sky at the birth of Christ. Some speculation as to just what it is have been made by astronomers and astrophysicists. Maybe a google turn out will bring up some articles and thoughts on it.

I think "star" would refer to any bright table lamp in the sky such as a planet or comet etc. A comet or nova be observed for 70 days around 5 BC and was record by Korean and Chinese astronomers.
