the suns gravity. it like tying string to a rock and spinning it arond. the intent (planet) wants to hold on to goin out but you (the sun) are keeping hold of it with the string(gravity)

Like all of the other answers, it stays within orbit because of gravity, but what they forgot was that the aim the planets don't go plunging into the sun or anything they are rotating around is because there is no friction to slow the rotation. Its a great deal like rolling a penny down a substantial funnel, if drops to the center, but if there be no friction, it would stay in one orbit.
Inertia keep them moving, and gravity keeps them moving contained by elliptical path around the sun. (Interferences from their moons and other planets cause the path to actually wobble somewhat from spotless ellipses.)
