No really, the solar panel charges either a capasitor or a rechargeable freestyle, which is what powers the electronics, when you shut it off, it save the charged for future use surrounded by low light conditions
so they don't use up all of our solar vigour we have....haha

Are you sure that you are not looking at a "clear" key?
So you don't run down the freestyle every time you close the lid (the battery that let's you use it within low light conditions).
