I have of late moved into a very small 2-bed house, next to electric heating. I intend to stir with solar panel but have definitely no knowledge of these. I expect to install GCH as I assume that I cannot run the electric heat off the panel. Any advice re Companies for supply and installation, Council grant etc etc

Assuming if you refer to council grants you are UK resident - contained by that case unless you are prepared to love the environment more than your finances don't do it - it will never be cost influential in our climate & will never steam more than just your hot river and some days not even that.
Better to change from electric heat to gas and leave it at that - condensing combi boilers are best bet for economical running.

You would be better putting the money towards a Micro CHP heat boiler, you'll get a give up and you can sell the excess enthusiasm back to your electricity company.

However I suspect you are thinking more or less panels for generate electricity? In which case that type of solar panel is woefully innefficient within this country. I would recommend to anyone to fit solar panels for hose down heating, it have saved us a fortune so far and will discharge itself back within about 5 -10 years depending on grease prices. For electricity generation though? Not recommended.
As for grant, when we applied we were told that adjectives the grant bread had be used up and that was that.
Where are you, depends on local climate for the solar vim available and subsidies avaiable -your council or phone book should help. or see if you can spot anyone within the neighbourhood near pannels & ask them.
eg Northern hemisphere needs to be south facing.

not photovoltaic.
